Historical Note

The School of Veterinary Medicine first offered classes at the State College of Washington in the 1899-1900 academic year. Both Microbiology and Pathology were among the subjects taught in the department as the school grew more specialized. After World War II the course offerings in both areas increased and in 1947, a division including both Microbiology and Pathology was created. By 1953, these two areas of concentration warranted the establishment of a separate Department of Microbiology and Pathology in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Content Description

The records contain the daily correspondence of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology at Washington State University, and reflect all aspects of its operation. The subject correspondence series includes material from 1954 through 1975. The bulk of the materials, however, cover the period from the mid-1960's through 1975. The chronological files series includes material from June 1974 through December 1975. Included in the records are: faculty and departmental correspondence, faculty service reports, minutes of meetings, interdepartmental and interoffice memoranda, departmental planning information, capital improvement planning and blueprints, reports, student correspondence and requests for letters of recommendation, U.S. and foreign government correspondence with the department, technical data, research project information and requests for information from the general public. Principal correspondents include Professors Richard P. Crawford; William C. Davis; E. Dennis Erickson; Toby Moll; W. L. Packard; L. Ringen; and Department Chairman S. G. Kenzy.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The records of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology are divided into two major series. The first series, subject correspondence, is arranged alphabetically by subject. The second series, chronological files, is arranged in a monthly chronology from June 1974 through December 1975. Apparently the departmental filing system underwent a partial change in mid-1974 from an alphabetical subject file to chronological file, resulting in two distinct series essentially containing the same type of material.

Acquisition Information

The records were transferred by the College of Veterinary Medicine to the University Archives, Washington State University in October 1978 (UA 78-38) by the department in accordance with the approved records schedule.

Processing Note

The records were processed between October 1979 and January 1980 by Andrew J. Gregg.
