Biographical Note

Dale Ross Croes was born in 1947 in Fresno, California. He received his B.A. in Anthropology in 1969 from the University of Washington. He then received his M.A. in 1972 and his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1977, both from Washington State University (WSU). He completed his Ph.D. dissertation research on basketry and cordage artifacts from the Ozette Village wet site and conducted post-doctoral research in collaboration with the Makah Tribal Nation at the Hoko River wet site and Hoko Rockshelter shell midden. In addition, Dr. Croes collaborated with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs to direct archaeological excavations at the National Historic Landmark wet site of Sunken Village and with the Squaxin Island Tribe to excavate the Qwu?gwes wet and dry sites. Dr. Croes is currently an adjunct professor in Anthropology at Washington State University and director of the Pacific Northwest Archaeological Society and Services.

Content Description

The Dale R. Croes Papers consist of materials from Dr. Croes’ archeological research and teaching in the Pacific Northwest, including raw data and research reports, surveys, theses, course materials, photographs, slides, negatives, maps, newspapers clippings, and correspondence concerning the Hoko River, Hoko Rockshelter, Ozette Village, Sunken Village, and Qwe?gwes sites. It also includes copies of grant proposals, conference and research trips, and bulletins from the Pacific Northwest Archaeological Society. The bulk of the collection material is from 1968 to 1991; however, it also includes background research sources used by Dr. Croes as well as later research and publications by Dr. Croes.

Dr. Croes worked collaboratively with Indigenous researchers and community members of the Makah Nation, the Squaxin Island Tribe, and the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians, and the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs. Formal field notes and slides, as well as cultural resources recovered during archaeological site digs, are found with the respective nations.

Series 1: Hoko Administration, 1959-1994: This series contains archaeological site information, surveys, photographs and negatives, site procedures, and forms. Research conducted collaboratively with the Makah Nation.

Series 2: Hoko Staff, 1977-1991: This series contains correspondence, research papers, raw data, and research proposal forms. There are no personnel records in this series.

Series 3: Hoko Publications/Theses, 1973-1984: This series includes copies of publications by Dr. Croes and collaborators, annual reports, and copies of theses by students working with Dr. Croes.

Series 4: Hoko Research, 1924-1989: This series is made up of research data, notes and analysis, and other materials that informed the work of Dr. Croes. Research conducted collaboratively with the Makah Nation.

Series 5: Hoko Rockshelter Research, 1949-1991: This series includes research data, notes and analysis, maps, photographs, surveys, and other materials related to Dr. Croes’ Hoko Rockshelter work. Research conducted collaboratively with the Makah Nation.

Series 6: Hoko Site Complex, 1972-1991: This series contains research data related to artifacts and basketry found at the Hoko Site Complex. Research conducted collaboratively with the Makah Nation.

Series 7: Black and White Hoko Wet Negatives/Flenniken’s Photographs, 1977-1983: This series includes photographs taken at archaeological sites as well as the dissertation of Jeff Flenniken, who worked with Dr. Croes.

Series 8: Early Northwest Coast Wet Site Data, 1972-1978: This series contains research and reports focused primarily on basketry. There are eight photographs in this series which cannot be reproduced without permission. Please contact the repository for further information.

Series 9: Ozette Fieldwork, 1966-2019: This series includes research reports, notes and analysis primarily focused on Ozette basketry and Northwest coast life. Research conducted collaboratively with the Makah Nation.

Series 10: Musqueam-Hesquiat Data, 1971-1980: This series includes raw data on basketry and cordage.

Series 11: Federal Proposals, 1969-2009: This series includes applications for grants submitted by Dr. Croes and collaborators. Some information in this series is restricted per federal privacy laws.

Series 12: Washington 1989 Centennial, 1984-1989: This series includes materials related to the Circum-Pacific Prehistory Conference in Seattle, Washington. Some information in this series is restricted per federal privacy laws.

Series 13: Circum-Pacific Prehistory Conference Audiocassettes: Session IX: Indigenous People’s Perspective of Their Pacific Heritage (by Native Peoples), 1989: This series includes audiocassettes of various sessions and is arranged by speaker.

Series 14: Publications and Newsletters, 1967-2020: This series contains publications and newsletters written by Dr. Croes, including his 1977 Ph.D. dissertation on Ozette basketry, as well as materials written by others used by Dr. Croes in his work.

Series 15: Sunken Village Site, circa 1843-2008: This series includes research materials, proposals, reports, permits, correspondence, and other materials related to the National Historic Landmark Sunken Village site, a Chinookan village found on Sauvie Island, Oregon. Research was conducted collaboratively with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs.

Series 16: Qwu?gwes Site Research, 1949-2013: This series includes annual reports, memorandum of understanding, permits, photographs, data, maps, and other resources concerned with the Qwu?gwes Site on Mud Bay in Puget Sound; research was conducted collaboratively with the Squaxin Tribe.

Series 17: Regional, National, and International Conferences, 1971-2020: This series contains conference proceedings, programs, and abstracts for conferences in which Dr. Croes presented, as well as attended, including the Northwest Anthropological Conference, the Northwest Native American Basket Weavers Association, the Circum-Pacific Prehistory Conference, and the Wetland Revolution in Prehistory conferences.

Series 18: Research Trips, 1988-2018: This series includes visiting fellowships, research projects, class trips and other materials related to Dr. Croes’ travels to Japan, British Columbia, Mexico, England, Alaska, and New York.

Series 19: Class Lecture Materials, 1969-2014: This series includes materials Dr. Croes used in teaching anthropology, archaeology, and basketry classes at WSU and South Puget Sound Community College.

Series 20: Pacific Northwest Archaeological Society, 1985-1997: This series contains raw materials used by Dr. Croes to create news bulletins for the Pacific Northwest Archaeological Society.

Series 21: Research Files, 1988-2008. This series includes files with original research data used for publications by Dr. Croes.

Series 22: Newspaper Media Coverage, 1968-2010: This series contains newspaper clippings regarding Dale Croes’ various projects and teaching.

Series 23: Oversize Items, 1973-1989: This series contains negatives removed due to size from Series 3: Hoko Publications/Theses, 1973-1984 (see folders 99-100), and ephemera from the 1989 Circum-Pacific Prehistory Conference.

This collection was processed keeping Dr. Croes’ arrangement, including names of series and folder titles. The collection is arranged into twenty-three series. Materials within each series are in rough chronological order.

Certain information was redacted per federal privacy law, with the original information physically segregated. Oversize negatives from Series 3, folders 99-100, were placed in oversize containers in Series 23.

Acquisition Information

Dale R. Croes donated this collection to the Washington State University Libraries in nine installments in 2019 and 2020 (MS.2019.17, MS.2019.20, MS.2020.09, MS.2020.11, MS.2020.12, MS2020.20, MS.2020.26, MS.2020.28, and MS.2020.30).

Dr. Croes’ formal field notes and slide images, as well as Native American cultural resources recovered during archaeological excavation, are archived respectively with the Makah Cultural and Research Center, the Squaxin Island Museum, Library and Research Center, and, for the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians, and the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs, at the University of Oregon Museum of Anthropology.

Photographs in Series 8, folder 266 were taken by Ruth Kirk, and the Ruth Kirk papers, 1950-1999 (4166) are at the University of Washington Libraries, Special Collections.

In addition, the Hesquiat Burial Cave basketry and cordage research in Series 8 was published by Kitty Bernick. The collection can be found at the Royal British Columbia Museum and Archives.
