Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Richard Deo Daugherty (1922-2014) was born and raised in Washington State. He earned his Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Washington and joined the WSU Anthropology Department in 1950. He led excavation efforts at multiple significant archaeological sites in Washington, including Ozette, Lind Coulee, and Marmes.

The Marmes Rockshelter is located in Franklin County, Washington, on the west side of the Palouse River Canyon. It is important in the history of the Columbia Plateau, providing a detailed picture of the life and culture of the Indigenous people of the southern Plateau.

This collection consists predominantly of 16 mm films and reel to reel audio of materials related to various archaeological digs completed by the Washington State University (WSU) Anthropology Department, principally under the direction of Richard Daugherty. Several films concern the Marmes Rockshelter. Most do not contain audio. The collection also contains a small amount of slides, negatives and filmstrips related to Richard Daugherty’s work. Titles are retained, although accuracy is unclear.

These materials, with the exception of filmstrips, were digitized in December 2021; videos are retained as mp4 files and the audio files are retained both as unedited wav files and as speed-corrected mp3 files in MASC’s archival digital storage.
