Historical Note

The first issue of the campus newspaper was published on March 16, 1896 as The College Barometer; publication continued monthly during the academic year in a magazine format until 1906.  In the fall of 1906, The College Barometer became a weekly publication in a newspaper format; semi-weekly publication began in December 1909.  A daily newspaper was launched in 1923 and the title changed to The Daily Barometer to reflect this expanded publication.  The Summer Barometer was published weekly during the summer term.  In 2016, the campus newspaper reduced print publication to a weekly, The Baro, and delivered daily news online through the Orange Media Network website. Publication of the Barometer was discontinued in 1898 due to the Spanish-American War, but was revived in 1900.  Publication continued through both the first and second World Wars.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The Barometer Campus Newspaper is arranged in two series: 1. Original Issues, 1896-1970 and 2. Microfilmed Issues, 1896-2014.

Acquisition Information

The Barometer Campus Newspaper was received regularly on distribution by the University Archives from the 1960s through 2011 and by the Special Collections and Archives Research Center beginning in 2014.

Processing Note

The former University Archives created microfilm reels 1-26 in the 1960s-1970s; in 1982, the Oregon Newspaper Project at the University of Oregon microfilmed 20 bound volumes of the Barometer that are identified as reels 27-46.  The Oregon Newspaper Project continued microfilming of the Barometer through 2014, when microfilming of the campus newspaper was suspended.  The University Archives had security copies of reels 1-50 created from use copies in the early 1990s; beginning with reel 51, the Oregon Newspaper Project provided security reels to Oregon State University that are maintained by the Special Collections and Archives Research Center.

Bound issues of the Barometer from the 1906-1907 and 1908-1909 thru 1913-1914 academic years were un-bound in 2020 for digitization and the issues retained for this archival collection.

Original issues of the newspaper from the 1990s to early 2000s that had been retained by the University Archives and described in earlier inventories and guides were removed from the collecton in 2020 to be used for digitization.
