Historical Note
The functions and duties of the Washington State University President are defined in University Faculty Manual, edition of 1987, as:
In addition to being designated as secretary ex officio of the Board of Regents, the President as general agent of the Board is the chief executive officer of Washington State University. The President administers the policies approved by the Board of Regents, serves as advisor to the Board on policies and operations and is the agent through whom representations to the Board are regularly made. Other functions of the chief executive officer include: Leadership in developing policies and organization for teaching, research, and extension programs. Public administration of the University, including representation before the Legislature and other state agencies. Responsibility for the general welfare of students; the development, operation and maintenance of buildings, lands and equipment; financial matters pertaining to development, operation and maintenance of University; and the administration of regulations adopted by the Board of Regents. Responsibility, delegated by the Board of Regents, for all appointments, promotion, salaries, leaves, resignations, and dismissals. Presiding at meetings of the general faculty.
Content Description
The collection consists of audio and video media relating to the Office of the President at Washington State University, and to the men who held that position. The majority of the materials consists of speeches or interviews given by or conducted with the Presidents while in office, though some materials date from after individuals left office, and so may be out of a strict chronological order. Also included is a small quantity of print materials closely related to the audio/video.

Administrative Information
Arrangement
The collection is arranged into a sequence of series ordered around the Presidents of Washington State University, with those president-based series arranged in the order in which those Presidents served. Within each series, items are organized chronologically.
Acquisition Information
This collection consists of material from a variety of accessions: UA1985-54, UA1989-18, UA 2000-35, UA 2002-05, UA 2003-02, UA2004-12, A 2006-07, UA2006-11, UA 2007-02, and UA 2008-15. The majority of those accessions were received either from the Presidents Office itself or various campus news media outlets.
Processing Note
As part of a multi-year media processing project, the materials were initially identified by Scott Stratton in 2010; Susan Vetter completed that process and organized much of the material from 2011-2012. Final organization and description of the presidential materials here was completed by Katrina Burch in late 2012.
