Summary
The OSU MEChA Records document the administrative and financial activities, as well as community advocacy and engagement, of the Oregon State University chapter of MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán) since their establishment between 1993 and 1994. OSU MEChA is the local campus chapter of the national MEChA student organization which comprises of many loosely affiliated campus chapters across educational institutions in the United States. MEChA as a national organization was originally established in 1969 through the authoring of "El Plan de Santa Barbara" which called for the unification of student organizations in advocating for the Latino/a and Chicano/a community, with a focus on expanding educational opportunities.

Historical Note

MEChA is a nationwide organization comprising hundreds of loosely affiliated chapters across the United States in various educational institutions. MEChA was founded in 1969 in Santa Barbara, California at a conference comprising students from twelve different schools; at this conference students adopted “El Plan de Santa Barbara,” a manifesto calling for the unification of student organizations into a collective seeking political and social change.

MEChA at OSU was founded between 1993 and 1994 by students at Oregon State University, and became recognized by the university as an official student organization. Throughout its years of activity, MEChA at OSU has worked to advocate for the Latino/a and Chicano/a community through activism and community engagement. In particular, MEChA hosts cultural events, advocates for educational opportunities, and gives voice to issues effecting the Latino/a and Chicano/a community at OSU, in Oregon, and nationally.

Content Description

The OSU MEChA Records consist of administrative documents, financial records, documentation of community engagement activities, community advocacy and education materials, artifacts, and a photo album. Included in the administrative records are meeting notes, agendas, correspondence, office materials, as well as foundational and constitutional material related to both MEChA on the national level and the OSU chapter. The financial records consist of budgets, receipts, payment and purchase requests, and financial reports. Included in the community engagement series, which focuses on MEChA's work internal to the university but open to the broader community, are various materials pertaining to events and activities hosted or attended by OSU MEChA including state, regional, and national conferences, tours, and planning materials. Also included is a series dedicated to materials pertaining to the 2004 MEChA National Conference which was hosted by OSU MEChA in Corvallis, OR. The community advocacy and education materials primarily consist of documents pertaining to OSU MEChA’s advocacy and activism within the broader Latino/a and Chicano/a community; topics covered within the materials include educational opportunities, cultural education, and social justice. Of particular note are materials related to MEChA’s support of migrant farmworkers and PCUN (Pineros Y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste).

This collection contains seven series. Series 1: Administration is organized alphabetically then chronologically. Series 2: Finances is organized chronologically. Series 3: Community Engagement, Series 4: 2004 MEChA National Conference, and Series 5: Community Advocacy and Education are organized alphabetically by topic. Short descriptions of the items in Series 6: Artifacts and Series 7: Photo Album are included.
