Historical Note

Since four years after its 1890 founding, Washington State University participated in intercollegiate football. Filming of those competitions began in the 1920s and continues today. Intercollegiate men's basketball dates to 1904, and women's to 1903. Games have been filmed on a regular, but not comprehensive, basis since about 1960.

Content Description

The collection consists primarily of coaching film (i.e. non-televised, single camera recordings, usually silent) from Washington State University athletic events.

Series 1: Football, 1993-2009. Subseries 1.1: VHS and SVHS, 1993-2005. These games were reorganized by the athletic department: one tape all now contains all of the WSU offensive plays, another all the defensive plays, and a third all the kicking/special teams. Their labeling has been maintained here, and it usually tells the intended destination of that copy: either it's the master, it's intended for / acquired by exchange with other teams for scouting, or it's intended for use by a particular coach or in a particular place. At the end of the series are two non-game videos. The majority of these have turned out to actually be in SVHS format, which MASC currently can not reproduce. Subseries 1.2: DVCPro, 1999-2004; and Subseries 1.3: MiniDV, 2001, 2004-2005, 2009. These games are filmed both from an end zone (EZ) camera and from a sideline (SL) camera. In some cases the second half is one tape, in some cases it's two, which is why some games have four tapes (EZ and SL each half) and some have six (EZ and SL for 1st half, 3rd quarter, 4th quarter). At the end of each subseries are six to seven non-game videos.

Series 2: Basketball, Men's, MiniDV, 1999-2006, and Series 3: Basketball, Women's, MiniDV, 1999-2006. Each tape in this series is either the first or second half of a basketball game, so almost all games are 2 tapes. Presumably overtimes are included on the second tape. For games where a tape is missing, that one is so noted. One VHS tape is at the end of the men's series.

Series 4: Soccer, MiniDV, 1999-2005. Like basketball, each tape in this series is either the first or second half of a soccer match, and for games where a tape is missing, that one is so noted. Unlike basketball, overtime periods are on a third tape.

Series 5: Volleyball, MiniDV, 1999-2003. Labeling of these tapes (usually T1 or T2) is maintained in this list. Due to the large number of T1 only matches, we're assuming that some of the matches are recorded in full on one tape, while others are split over two.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The collection is organized by sport, then by format within each sport, and then chronologically within each format. The few non-game items have been placed at the end of the three football subseries. A few unlabeled tapes are included in here, and those are retained where they were when this collection was received, on the assumption that's where they fit chronologically.

Acquisition Information

The materials in this collection were transferred to Washington State University Libraries' Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections on April 10th, 2014 by Scott Vik, Director of Sports Video in WSU's Athletics Department. They were retained as UA2014-07. Additional materials were received on June 20, 2014 from Kevin Night Pipe of WSU Athletics Sports Video; they were treated as a misplaced part of the same accession, and interfiled that day.

Processing Note

This collection was processed in April 2014 by University Archivist Mark O'English.
