Datus C. Proper Papers, 1864-2003

Abstract: The Datus C. Proper Papers consist of journals, correspondence, family history documents, literary manuscript drafts, galley proofs, research notes, publisher correspondence, photographs and other memorabilia which document Proper's life as a student, United States Foreign Service officer, and outdoor writer. The subjects of Proper's writings encompass the full spectrum of fly fishing for trout, from stream side entomology to the ethics of catch and release angling. Hunting, particularly pheasant hunting and the training of dogs for the sport, is another subject heavily represented.

Virginia S. Burlingame Papers, 1864-1989

Abstract: The Virginia S. Burlingame Papers consist of literary manuscripts, research files, and ancestral family papers created or collected by her. Burlingame's literary manuscripts include original drafts or galley proofs of her three published books, along with many of her magazine articles which dealt with religious themes, travel, and Western history. Burlingame's ancestral papers include letters, documents, photos, and a transcribed diary created by John W. Wright, her maternal grandfather, who served in the Sixth Iowa Cavalry during the Civil War and took part in the 1864 campaign against the Lakota nation.

William H. H. and Emma Dickinson Papers, 1823-1908

Abstract: William H.H. and Emma Dickinson were early residents of Missoula, Montana. The collection contains a Dickinson family genealogy, Mr. Dickinson's Civil War diary and a later autobiographical account based on the diary, Mrs. Dickinson's reminiscence of early Missoula, an autograph book from Mr. Dickinson's family, personal and business financial records, an assay report, and early photographs of Missoula.

Elias Henry Brodie diary, 1865-1900

Abstract: Typescript diary of Elias Henry Brodie, Sergeant Major, 1st Battalion, 14th U.S. Infantry, 1865-1896, regarding his service in the military. The journal was continued after his death by his son, Edward Everett Brodie. Elias Henry Brodie (1826-1896) entered the United States Army at age 13 as a bugler and served in the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, and the Indian Wars. In 1868, he was transferred to the Pacific Coast. Edward Everett Brodie was a lighthouse keeper in Oregon and Washington.

Kirby Ross papers, 1917-1929

Abstract: Kirby Stewart Ross, also known as Kirby G. Ross, served in the U.S. Army in France and Germany during World War I, and was awarded a Silver Star. Collection includes two diaries regarding his military training in Oregon and his combat experiences in France; certificates from the French government for his military service; and correspondence regarding his awards.

Abstract: Philip Kearny (1815-1862) was a lifelong miltary officer who perished in the Civil War. This diary describes an 1850 trip from San Francisco to Vancouver and subsequent return to California.

Royal Augustus Bensell diary and scrapbook, 1862-1864

Abstract: Royal Augustus Bensell (1838-1921) served as a corporal in the California Infantry during the American Civil War, was assigned to Ft. Yamhill, Oregon for three years, and later moved to Yaquina Bay, Oregon. The collection (1862-1864) contains a diary kept during his service, and scrapbook.

Lemuel Evans Boren papers, 1899-1920

Abstract: Lemuel Evans Boren (1879-1961) served in the infantry in Cuba and in the Philippine Islands, was appointed inspector in the Philippine Constabulary in 1901, promoted to major, and resigned in 1909. The collection (1899-1920) contains diaries, a monograph, military records, certificates, photographs, correspondence, and other papers.
