- Typescript diary of Elias Henry Brodie, Sergeant Major, 1st Battalion, 14th U.S. Infantry, 1865-1896, regarding his service in the military. The journal was continued after his death by his son, Edward Everett Brodie. Elias Henry Brodie (1826-1896) entered the United States Army at age 13 as a bugler and served in the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, and the Indian Wars. In 1868, he was transferred to the Pacific Coast. Edward Everett Brodie was a lighthouse keeper in Oregon and Washington.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Elias Henry Brodie (1826-1896) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He entered the United States Army at age 13 as a bugler and served in the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, and the Indian Wars. In 1868 he was transferred to the Pacific Coast and stationed at Fort Stevens, Oregon, where he served as ordnance sergeant until his retirement in 1885. His son, Edward Everett Brodie, was a lighthouse keeper at Tillamook Rock Light Station in Oregon and at North Head Light, Washington; he later was a newspaper publisher and diplomat.
