Barbara Yamada was born in 1946 in Pocatello, Idaho, to Lina and Hiroshi "Mike" Yamada. She moved to Salt Lake City in the late 1960s, where she was a ski instructor at Park City West for a year before moving to the ski school at Alta. Yamada has been involved with the United States Ski Association (USSA) since the early 1970s, serving as the executive director of the Intermountain Division in 1973. She has also volunteered for various foundations and organizations dedicated to winter sports including: the Alf Engen Ski Museum Foundation Board and the J.
