Barbara Yamada was born in 1946 in Pocatello, Idaho, to Lina and Hiroshi "Mike" Yamada. She moved to Salt Lake City in the late 1960s, where she was a ski instructor at Park City West for a year before moving to the ski school at Alta. Yamada has been involved with the United States Ski Association (USSA) since the early 1970s, serving as the executive director of the Intermountain Division in 1973. She has also volunteered for various foundations and organizations dedicated to winter sports including: the Alf Engen Ski Museum Foundation Board and the J. Willard Marriott Library's Utah Ski Archives Advisory Board. Beginning in 2000, Yamada began serving as chair of the Marriott Library's annual Ski Affair. In addition to her work preserving and promoting winter sports, Yamada volunteered with the University of Utah Athletic Department, the Adopt a Native Elder program with the Navajo Nation, and the Park City Institute. Barbara Yamada was inducted into the Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame in 2018 for her contributions as a Ski Sport Innovator.

The Barbara Yamada photograph collection consists of 2 boxes containing photograph prints and digital-only items. Folders 3-10 in Box 1 are digital only, consisting of scans of photograph prints and born-digital photos. The subject of these photographs is a mixture of images related to sports collected by Yamada; Yamada family photographs, particularly of Hiroshi Yamada serving in the United States Army's 442nd Infantry in Italy during World War II; and photographs of Barbara Yamada, particularly her volunteer work with various organizations including the Utah Ski Archives. In addition to images, the collection contains digital-only scans of clippings of news articles related to Yamada's life. Box 2 is oversize and contains a poster of Alf Engen signed by Michael Leavitt, Francis "Frank" Magleby, Randy L. Dryer, Mitt Romney and Alan K. Engen. The images date from approximately 1940 to 2010.
