Historical Background

On Friday November 24, 2017, the 4th Annual Black Lives Matter Not Black Friday protest was held in Westlake Park region of Seattle between the hours of 12:00PM and 8:00PM. The protest was hosted by the Black Liberation Front Seattle. Protesters gathered together and chanted “Black Lives Matter” and were demanding justice for African Americans killed by police officers. The protest offered a stark contrast between the holiday festivities and tree lighting occurring at roughly the same time in the Westlake shopping center. Protesters were encouraged to wear hoodies and jackets with the Black Liberation Front Seattle branding on it. Close to 11,000 people had expressed interest in the protest via the groups Facebook page, however on the day of the march only a few hundred protesters were in attendance.
