		  the 2017 Seattle Black Lives Matter Not Black Friday protest</abstract></did><odd type="hist"><p>On Friday November 24, 2017, the 4th Annual Black Lives Matter Not
		  Black Friday protest was held in Westlake Park region of Seattle between the
		  hours of 12:00PM and 8:00PM. The protest was hosted by the Black Liberation
		  Front Seattle. Protesters gathered together and chanted “Black Lives Matter”
		  and were demanding justice for African Americans killed by police officers. The
		  protest offered a stark contrast between the holiday festivities and tree
		  lighting occurring at roughly the same time in the Westlake shopping center.
		  Protesters were encouraged to wear hoodies and jackets with the Black
		  Liberation Front Seattle branding on it. Close to 11,000 people had expressed
		  interest in the protest via the groups Facebook page, however on the day of the

				  Charleena Lyles, a 30 year old mother of three, was fatally shot on June 18,
				  2017, by two Seattle Police department officers. Mike Brown (May 20, 1996 -
				  August 9, 2014) was an 18 year old African American male who was fatally shot
				  by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri after being suspected of
				  robbing a convenience store. This shooting sparked unrest in Ferguson, where
				  both peaceful and violent protests took place for more than a week and a
				  nightly curfew was established by the Ferguson Police Department. The slogan
				  “Hands up, don’t shoot” was used as part of the protest, because there was a
				  claim Brown had his hands up in surrender before he was shot. However, there

				  Philando Castile was shot and killed on July 6, 2016 in St. Anthony, Minnesota.
