Dorothy "Dorotha" Estella Rector was born June 1903 in Cascade, Montana. She attended Great Falls Public Schools prior to attending the State University of Montana in Missoula (now known as the University of Montana.) She attended college from 1921 to 1925, with a brief year at the University of Minnesota in 1922. She received her Bachelors of Arts, paired with a teaching certificate, from the University of Montana in 1925. Following her time at the college, not much is known about her life. In 1940, she lived in Panama Canal Zone in Panama, to be with her married sister, and obtained work as a secretary for a mining camp.
