Historical Note

The Seattle Audubon Society was organized in April 1916 and affiliated with the national organization in August 1916. It is one of the earliest local organizations devoted to the protection of wildlife and the conservation of natural resources. Mrs. Charles Crickmore was the society's first president and professor Trevor Kincaid was one of its organizers. Activities of the early organization included monthly meetings, bird walks, an annual bird census, formation of a Junior Audubon Club, and various efforts to preserve bird habitats in the Seattle area. In 1933 the club began to publish a newsletter, first known as The Seattle Wren, then Audubon Warblings, and the Seattle Audubon Notes and later, Earthcare Northwest. In the later 1960s and 1970s, the Seattle Audubon Society was increasingly involved in environmental issues.
