Seattle Audubon Society authors Klaus G. Sonnenberg and Earl J. Larrison, and
of the Seattle Audubon Society Field Day, 1966.
The Seattle Audubon Society was organized in April 1916 and
affiliated with the national organization in August 1916. It is one of the
earliest local organizations devoted to the protection of wildlife and the
conservation of natural resources. Mrs. Charles Crickmore was the society's
first president and professor Trevor Kincaid was one of its organizers.
Activities of the early organization included monthly meetings, bird walks, an
annual bird census, formation of a Junior Audubon Club, and various efforts to
preserve bird habitats in the Seattle area. In 1933 the club began to publish a
newsletter, first known as
The Seattle Wren, then
Audubon Warblings, and the
Seattle Audubon Notes and later,
Earthcare Northwest. In the later 1960s
and 1970s, the Seattle Audubon Society was increasingly involved in
environmental issues.
The collection is arranged in 3 series:

The collection contains images of Earl J. Larrison and Klaus G.
Sonnenberg with stuffed birds; a Seattle Audubon Society Field Day, May 28-30,
1966; and several society field trips. The photographs of the field day were
made by "Whitnall" and include a picture of Hazel Wolf, who served as the
secretary for the society for 37 years.

Larrison
Earl J. Larrison served as an officer in the Seattle Audubon
Society and was the author of the first of the Trailside Series of textbooks to
be put out by the society. In 1968 he and Karl G. Sonnenberg co-authored the
Seattle Audubon Society book,
Washington Birds: Their Location and Identification.

for 37 years and is credited with the creation of 21 Audubon chapters in

The Seattle Audubon Society took field trips to Seattle's Lincoln
Park and to Green Lake in Seattle in 1954. The trip to Lincoln Park included
the first Junior Bird Walk.
