      <bioghist encodinganalog="5451_" id="a2">
         <p> The Seattle Audubon Society was organized in April 1916 and
		  affiliated with the national organization in August 1916. It is one of the
		  earliest local organizations devoted to the protection of wildlife and the
		  conservation of natural resources. Mrs. Charles Crickmore was the society's
		  first president and professor Trevor Kincaid was one of its organizers.
		  Activities of the early organization included monthly meetings, bird walks, an
		  annual bird census, formation of a Junior Audubon Club, and various efforts to
		  preserve bird habitats in the Seattle area. In 1933 the club began to publish a
		  newsletter, first known as 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">The Seattle Wren</title>, then 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">Audubon Warblings</title>, and the 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">Seattle Audubon Notes</title> and later, 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">Earthcare Northwest</title>. In the later 1960s
		and 1970s, the Seattle Audubon Society was increasingly involved in
		environmental issues.</p>

         <p>The collection contains images of Earl J. Larrison and Klaus G.
		  Sonnenberg with stuffed birds; a Seattle Audubon Society Field Day, May 28-30,
		  1966; and several society field trips. The photographs of the field day were
		  made by "Whitnall" and include a picture of Hazel Wolf, who served as the
		  secretary for the society for 37 years.</p>
