Biographical Note

Nancy Moore Rockafellar (b. 1947) was a scholar of history of science, medicine, and public health. Rockafellar originally trained in medical technology at the University of Minnesota and worked as a clinical laboratory technologist for ten years. In 1986 she earned a master’s degree in biomedical history at the University of Washington School of Medicine and received a Ph.D. from the Department of History at the University of Washington in 1990. Her research and writing focused on regional history relating to the history of medicine and public health. Nancy was the Washington State Medical Association (WSMA) Centennial History Project historian, supporting the Washington State Centennial, in 1989. Rockafellar later served as a historian with the Oral History Program, Department of History and Health Sciences, at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1994 until her retirement in 2007.

Records include research files, interview transcripts and photographs for Rockefellar’s master’s thesis, Public Health in Progressive Seattle, 1876-1919 , and doctoral dissertation Making the World Safe for the Soldiers of Democracy: Patriotism, Public Health and Venereal Disease Control on the West Coast, 1910-1919 , as well as research for Saddlebags to Scanners: The First 100 Years of Medicine in Washington State (published in 1989) ; A Beacon of Light: One Hundred Years of Health Care at St. Joseph Hospital (published in 1990 ), as well as an unpublished history of Group Health Cooperative.
