Mayfield attended Weber State University in Ogden Utah, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Geography and Sociology. He also attended Montana State University for a year of graduate study, and attended numerous continuing education seminars, courses and workshops related to community development, economic development, and real estate.

In addition to his work on the Bozeman City-County Planning Board, he also worked at the Davis County (Utah) Planning Department (1966-1969, Draftsman/Staff Planner), Helena City-County Planning Board (Helena, Montana, 1969-1970, Associate Planner). After his Resignation from the Bozeman City-County Planning Board in 1974, Mayfield established Rick Mayfield Associates, Inc. which was a planning consulting firm which served communities throughout Montana. He simultaneously worked as a Real Estate Broker for Goldencrest Realty Consultants Inc.

After his retirement in 2001 he continued to work on projects through Rick Mayfield Associates, Inc.
