- A collection of Rick Mayfield's work in community planning throughout Montana. The papers include reports produced during his time as the first Planning Director appointed to the City-County Planning board (1970-1974), as well as reports and supporting documentation relating to the planning consulting firm, Rick Mayfield Associates, Inc. (1974-1983). Rick Mayfield was the first Planning Director appointed to the Bozeman City-County Planning Board. He held this position from December 1970-March 1974. During that period, the first ever community plan for the Bozeman area was produced (Bozeman Area Plan 1972).
Mayfield attended Weber State University in Ogden Utah, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Geography and Sociology. He also attended Montana State University for a year of graduate study, and attended numerous continuing education seminars, courses and workshops related to community development, economic development, and real estate.
In addition to his work on the Bozeman City-County Planning Board, he also worked at the Davis County (Utah) Planning Department (1966-1969, Draftsman/Staff Planner), Helena City-County Planning Board (Helena, Montana, 1969-1970, Associate Planner). After his Resignation from the Bozeman City-County Planning Board in 1974, Mayfield established Rick Mayfield Associates, Inc. which was a planning consulting firm which served communities throughout Montana. He simultaneously worked as a Real Estate Broker for Goldencrest Realty Consultants Inc.
In 1983 Rick Mayfield moved to Utah where he worked as the Director of the Planning and Economic Development Department in Davis County (Utah, 1983-1993), then worked in the Department of Community and Economic Development for the State of Utah (1993-2001, Deputy Director and Division Director of Business and Economic Development). After his retirement in 2001 he continued to work on projects through Rick Mayfield Associates, Inc.
During his time in Utah, Mayfield was involved in community projects such as The Friends of Antelope Island, Metro Utah, Inc., Bureau of Land Management's Uta Resource Advisory Council, and other community planning projects and councils.

The Rick Mayfield papers are a collection of Mayfield's work in community planning throughout Montana. The papers include reports produced during his time as the first Planning Director appointed to the City-County Planning board (1970-1974), as well as reports and supporting documentation relating to the planning consulting firm, Rick Mayfield Associates, Inc. (1974-1983). The papers include Bozeman's first ever community plan (1972), which includes resources connected to zoning, subdivision planning, and additional city regulations. Papers connected to Rick Mayfield Associates are project files connected to area plans, environmental assessments, and community impact studies the firm conducted.

Separated Materials
The original donation from Rick Mayfield included 57 items that have since been removed from the collection. The removed items consist of spiral bound area studies, local planning reports, environmental assessments and reports, and proposals. About 50 of these items have been catalogued and described bibliographically. The locations covered by those plans and studies include Gallatin County (Bozeman, Big Sky, West Yellowstone), Madison County (Hebgen Lake area), Rosebud County, Park County, McCone County, Big Horn County, Roosevelt County (Wolf Point, Poplar), Scobey (in Daniels County), Sanders County (Thompson Falls, and Plains), and Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho). Six items were removed as duplicate items.

These papers encompass Rick Mayfield's work as the first Planning Director appointed by the Bozeman City-County Planning Board. Most of the contents of this series were originally housed in two binders. The items from those binders have retained their original order within this series. The first binder was labeled the Bozeman Area Plan and contained the Bozman Area Plan 1972, through the Junk Vehicle Disposal Law 1973. The second binder was also labeled Bozeman Area Plan and contained items starting with Memorandum: Changes to the Text of the Bozeman Area Zoning Code 1976 through Septic Tanks: Bulletin 332, 1969.
