Historical Note

H. Paul Culver was a pilot and known aviation and air mail pioneer. He was the first pilot to fly the first scheduled air mail service route into New York on May 15, 1918; the first day when air mail service began. He was also a member of the Early Birds of Aviation, an organization whose members all flew solo before December 1916.

The collection contains printed materials (i.e. National Geographic Maps, publications, and memorabilia) about the early days of aviation and the "Early Birds;" correspondence; newspaper clippings; photographs; Ellington Field Yearbook dated 1918; invitations and programs to aviation events; and advertisements dealing with the early years of aviation.
