Historical Note

The Jackpile Mine was the world’s largest open pit uranium mine near Anaconda, New Mexico. It was operated by the ARCO-Anaconda Corporation. The mine opened in 1953 and operated until 1982. Dr. James H. Olsen, Jr. was the chief engineer of the Jackpile Mine from 1977-1980 and then the Jackpile Reclamation Project manager for the Pueblo of Laguna Corporation from 1989-1994. In this capacity, Dr. Olsen oversaw both the day to day operation of the mine and the reclamation project.
