History of Dr. James H. Olsen, Jr. and the Jackpile Mine

The Jackpile Mine was the world’s largest open pit uranium mine near Anaconda, New Mexico. It was operated by the ARCO-Anaconda Corporation. The mine opened in 1953 and operated until 1982. Dr. James H. Olsen, Jr. was the chief engineer of the Jackpile Mine from 1977-1980 and then the Jackpile Reclamation Project manager for the Pueblo of Laguna Corporation from 1989-1994. In this capacity, Dr. Olsen oversaw both the day to day operation of the mine and the reclamation project.

 Scope and Content

Collection contains digital images, reports, surveys, correspondence, histories, and memoirs from Dr. Olsen’s time working for ARCO-Anaconda as chief engineer of the Jackpile Mine and Reclamation Project.
