Historical Background
The 36th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day march and rally was held on January 15, 2018 to pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. It was organized by the Seattle/King County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee which is composed of a variety of diverse groups that come together annually to host this event. This year's activities started with an opportunity fair, workshops and rally at Garfield High School and finally a march at 12:30pm to downtown Seattle. The theme of this year’s celebration was “Take a Knee for Justice” which was derived from the controversial move by National Football League players who decided to kneel during the playing of the National Anthem. The theme speaks to the need for justice throughout our society: locally, nationally, and globally. Through the theme “Take a Knee for Justice” the MLK Celebration Committee highlighted “our responsibility to correct the injustices of the world, from our criminal justice system to our schools, to senseless military misadventures that threaten human right and rob our funds.” (MLKSeattle.org). This year’s celebration also coincided with the 50th Anniversary of MLK Jr.’s assassination.

Description: Sign reading "Save the Salish Sea. No oil - No coal - No gas" at Garfield High School, Seattle, Washington
Text on sign reads: "Save the Salish Sea. No oil - No coal - No gas. [With an image of what looks to be a starfish to represent the mission of those fighting to 'Save the Salish Sea']." The poster was created by Longhouse Media. LongHouse Media is a Seattle based group whose mission is to catalyze Indigenous communities to use the media as a tool for self-expression, cultural preservation and social change. The Salish Sea is a network of coastal waterways that includes a southwestern portion of the Canadian province of British Columbia and a northwestern portion of the United States in the state of Washington. Its major bodies of water are the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound. The controversy stems from the proposed expansion of the TransMountain Pipeline that runs from Canada's interior to the Pacific Ocean. There are several environmentalist concerns ranging from increased greenhouse emissions, disturbance to the Orcas population due to increased ship traffic, and the increased risk of oil spills.

Description: Sign reading "Hands up, don't shoot" on E. Union St., Seattle, Washington
Text on sign reads: "Hands up, don't shoot [with an image of two hands]." Mike Brown (May 20, 1996 - August 9, 2014) was an 18 year old African American male who was fatally shot by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri after being suspected of robbing a convenience store. This shooting sparked unrest in Ferguson, where both peaceful and violent protests took place for more than a week and a nightly curfew was established by the Ferguson Police Department. The slogan “Hands up, don’t shoot” was used as part of the protest, because there was a claim Brown had his hands up in surrender before he was shot. However, there was no evidence found in an FBI investigation to support this claim.
