The controversy stems from the proposed expansion of the TransMountain Pipeline that runs from Canada's interior to the Pacific Ocean. Mike Brown (May 20, 1996 - August 9, 2014) was an 18 year old African American male who was fatally shot by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri after being suspected of robbing a convenience store. This shooting sparked unrest in Ferguson, where both peaceful and violent protests took place for more than a week and a nightly curfew was established by the Ferguson Police Department. The slogan “Hands up, don’t shoot” was used as part of the protest, because there was a claim Brown had his hands up in surrender before he was shot. Charleena Lyles, a 30 year old mother of three, was fatally shot on June 18, 2017, by two Seattle Police department officers who shot her because she was armed with a knife. It had been reported that Lyles suffered from mental health issues and had recently been arrested and booked at King County Jail. She was released on June 14, 2017. A condition of her release was mental-health counseling. A pregnant Lyles was killed four days later.
