Biographical Note

Edward " Ted" M. Eyring, son of prominent chemist and Mormon scholar Henry Eyring, was born on January 7, 1931. He earned his B.A. in physics in 1955, his M.S. in chemistry in 1956, and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1960 from the University of Utah. After fulfilling a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Physikalische Chemie in Goettingen, Germany, Eyring returned to the University of Utah as an assistant professor in 1961. He was later promoted to an associate professor in 1965 and to a professor of chemistry in 1968. He served as the chairman of the chemistry department in 1973-1976 and 1984-1985. In 2013, Eyring retired and was awarded emeritus status. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Physical Society, Society for Applied Spectroscopy, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His research interests included the kinetics and mechanisms of fast reactions in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions, the application of lasers in chemistry, and photoacoustic spectroscopy.
