Eyring was a professor of chemistry at the University of Utah from 1961 until his retirement in 2013. His career included two stints as the chairman of the chemistry department from 1973-1976 and 1984-1985. This collection contains correspondence, lab manuals, memoranda, minutes, reports, and syllabi documenting his administration of the chemistry department, his research interests, and his teaching activities. Edward Ted M. Eyring, son of prominent chemist and Mormon scholar Henry Eyring, was born on January 7, 1931. He earned his B.A. in physics in 1955, his M.S. in chemistry in 1956, and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1960 from the University of Utah. After fulfilling a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Physikalische Chemie in Goettingen, Germany, Eyring returned to the University of Utah as an assistant professor in 1961. He was later promoted to an associate professor in 1965 and to a professor of chemistry in 1968. He served as the chairman of the chemistry department in 1973-1976 and 1984-1985. In 2013, Eyring retired and was awarded emeritus status. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Physical Society, Society for Applied Spectroscopy, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His research interests included the kinetics and mechanisms of fast reactions in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions, the application of lasers in chemistry, and photoacoustic spectroscopy.

The records in this collection primarily document Edward M. Eyring's activities in undergraduate chemistry education. This includes syllabi and lab manuals from courses that he taught throughout his career. There are also records pertaining to his his collaboration with the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center in developing an undergraduate curriculum that utilized community service projects; his affiliation with education-promoting organizations such as the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium; and his involvement in university education-oriented committees such as the Campus Recreation Committee, the Taskforce on Freshman Chemistry Curriculum, the University Committee on Environmental Issues, and the University Council on Teacher Education.

This collection also documents some of Edward Eyring's research activities in fossil fuel liquefaction, chemical reaction rates, and the use of laser technology in chemical research. Much of the correspondence in this collection consists of Eyring's interactions with colleagues from other U.S. and international institutions. Of note is the material dating from 1989 to 1994 pertaining to Eyring's association with Stan Pons concerning cold fusion research. Also covered are fellowships that he held with the U.S. Airforce, NATO, and the Indo-U.S. Subcommission on Education and Cultural Fellowship.

Eyring's administrative activities are primarily covered in the memoranda from the corresponding years of his department chairmanship.
