Historical Note

The Social and Economic Sciences Research Center (SESRC) at Washington State University was created in 1968, when WSU president Glenn Terrell identified a need for the campus to gather accurate and reliable information on the current attitudes and opinions of university faculty, staff, and students. The SESRC was formed in response to that need.

Content Description

The collection consists of publications of the Washington State University Social and Economic Sciences Research Center (SESRC), circa 1986-2010. They appear to primarily be three types of materials: Data Reports, which are extensive data without analysis; Technical Reports, which are data and analysis of survey results, and simple Reports, which are smaller summary documents. Most have an identification number of the form YY-XXX where YY is the last two digits of the year of the publication, and XXX is a three digit number indicating order of publication in that year.

As this is Dr. Don Dillman’s collection and much of his career focused on creating and improving surveys, many, though not all, of these deal with that topic. Many, though not all, of the publications are ones Dillman was involved with.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

This is an unprocessed collection. Any arrangement reflects either a pre-existing order from the records' creators or previous custodians, or preliminary sorting performed by staff.

The materials are more or less in the order they were taken off shelves and out of various drawers, then moved to WSU MASC, then boxed. So, fairly chaotic.

Acquisition Information

Don Dillman of WSU SESRC arranged the donation of his personal papers to the Washington State University Libraries’ in early 2024, though the materials were not collected until December, after his death. These SESRC publications have been retained as UA2024-03.

Processing Note

These materials came from the office of Don Dillman of SECRC, and were primarily those publications retained by him over the course of his work. SESRC had many more publications than these; we would recommend retaining this set as unprocessed in hopes of some day receiving a more complete set from SESRC, at which time these can either be used to fill holes and/or disposed of.

Separated Materials

Many personal papers of Don Dillman were also brought in to MASC at the same time; these are retained as MS2024-29.

Numerous books from his working library were added to the WSU Libraries’ collections at the same time, though no record of individual titles was retained.
