Content Description

The Campus Directories for Oregon State University provide information about students and employees of Oregon State over more than a century from the 1910s to 2010s.  These directories were published by students and, while they include directory information for Oregon State employees, were primarily intended for students.

The format of the directories and the student groups responsible for publication changed with time, but the core elements in all directories are lists of students with addresses and phone numbers, faculty and staff directories, and local advertisements.  The first directories were published by Oregon Agricultural College students in pharmacy and commerce and included articles about business, marketing, and pharmacy practice.    From the 1910s through the 1940s, the student directory was published multiple (2-4) times per academic year; since 1949, the directory has been published annually (in the fall) for each academic year.  For more than 50 years – from 1943 to 1996 – the directory was known as the Fussers’ Guide.  “Fussing” was a slang term at Oregon State for dating; the title Fussers’ Guide referred to the use of the directory as a way for students to make social connections with one another.

In addition to the core directory information for students and employees, the directories have included lists of student organizations, living groups, administrators, and academic units; calendars of university events; and a campus map.  In the last several years of publication, the directory included a section for Oregon State University retirees with contact information.

Prior to the early 2000s, a separate staff directory was published at Oregon State.  When that publication ceased, the Campus Directory was the sole directory published at Oregon State and served for both students and employees.  The Campus Directory ceased publication in 2014 with the directory for the 2014/2015 academic year.
