Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Mountaineers was founded in Seattle, Washington in 1906. The first president was Edmond S. Meany. Standing committees were appointed at that first meeting of the club to take over the work and organization of the two main activities, the local and annual outings. The number of standing committees grew with the increasing membership and interests of the club. Mountain climbing has been one of the major interests. In 1935 climbing classes were organized to teach the fundamentals of Mountaineering. The Mountaineers were the first organized group to develop skiing in the Northwest. There are branches in Tacoma, Everett, and Olympia. Norman Winn was president of the Mountaineers from October 1975 to October 1977. James Sanford served as president of the Mountaineers from 1978 to 1979. A.J. Culver served as president from 1979 to 1981.
