Historical Note
The Vice President for Student Affairs oversees the operations of the Admissions Office, Alcohol and Drug Education Center, Campus Recreation, Career Services Department, Center for Academic Advising, Center for Disabled Student Services, Center for Ethnic Student Affairs, Counseling Center, Educational Opportunity Programs, International Student Services, Lowell Bennion Community Service Center, Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, Office of High School and Potential Student Services, Office of the Registrar, Office of Residential Living, Scheduling Office, Student Health Service, Student Involvement Center, University Counseling Center, University Union, and the Women's Resource Center. In 1973 the title of the office was changed from Dean of Students to the Dean of Student Affairs. The title was again changed in 1978 to the Dean of Student Affairs and Services. In 1989 the position was elevated to Vice President for Student Affairs and added to the University President's Cabinet.
Content Description
The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence,, memoranda, minutes, news articles, newsletters, and reports from the administrations of Vice Presidents Franklin L. McKean (1978-1984), Normand L. Gibbons (1984-1995), and Sybil R. Todd (1995-1997). These records primarily document the Vice Presidents Office's administration over its subordinate divisions. Sometimes the divisions within Student Affairs have their own subdivisions which are listed apart from their parent department in this collection. For example, ASUU, the Greek System, and the Lesbian and Gay Student Union are all affiliated with the Student Involvement Center, but are listed separately. The rest of the material from this collection documents interactions that the Vice President's office had with other departments and divisions within the University of Utah as well as local, state, national, and international organizations outside of the University. 1.25 linear feet of this collection are comprised of commencement records. Approximately one half of a linear foot of material-consisting mostly of course descriptions-is from Ramona Adams who was an Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Services, Associate Professor for the Graduate School of Social Work, and an instructor for the Division of Continuing Education.
