Historical Note

The Division of Student Affairs oversees student success and growth outside the classroom. As of 2025, the division oversees the co-curricular student experience including housing and dining, counseling and health services, recreational sports, diversity and cultural centers, student leadership and involvement programs, the student union, career development, academic progress programs, and international student services. It pursues the development of a purposeful, open, just, disciplined, caring, and celebrative community on the Oregon State University campus. It is organized around a model of shared leadership, participatory management, ongoing professional development, and career-long learning opportunities.

The division got its start in the 1910s as the Student Affairs Committee. It formally grew out of the Dean of Students Office in the 1960s, with Robert W. Chick (1918-1996) being the first Vice President of Student Services. It was renamed to Student Affairs in the 1980s under the leadership of Jo Anne Trow (1931-). Following Trow’s retirement in 1995, Larry Roper (1953-) was named Vice Provost for Student Affairs, until his retirement in 2014.

Content Description

The Student Affairs Records documents the wide range of activities that fall in the realm of student life experience outside of the classroom, including housing and dining, student led groups, Memorial Union, health services, counseling, student conduct, incidential fees, minority students, and intramural sports. The records consist of policy and procedure directives, newsletters, correspondence, annual reports, lists of student activities, announcements, and a significant number of records of the Student Incidental Fees Committee.

The Student Affairs Records contains five series: Annual and Biennial Reports, Committees, Subject Files, Women’s Faculty Club, and Publications. The annual and biennial reports document the policy, procedure and funds of student services offered by Oregon State University. Both the committee and subject files records document significant issues and groups at Oregon State. Of particular note there is a directory of “Black Potential” by the Urban League of Portland from 1973. The Women's Faculty Club was an organization that promoted collegial relations between faculty women.

Access to Student Health Services administrative records (in Series 3) is restricted due to the presence of confidential information. For more information about access to restricted materials, please see our Guide to the Special Collections and Archives Research Center.
