Historical Note
Hoyt “Pete” Spelman was a graduate of Kent School and Yale with postgraduate work at Harvard/Radcliffe and Oxford. He spent most of his working life in marketing and sales, largely in the magazine publishing business. For many years he was in charge of marketing for The New Yorker magazine. Subsequently he was Senior Vice-President and Project Director for the Marketing Corporation of America and Managing Director of The Moorgate Group, the American arm of a British financial marketing company. For several years he was an independent marketing consultant and in 1994 became a broker with Halstead, a real estate firm.
Content Description
The collection contains correspondence (1969-1980), including memoranda to The New Yorker staff regarding advertising, with Phil Dougherty (advertising columnist of The New York Times) concerning a publicity campaign, with William Whitworth (columnist and associate editor of The New Yorker) regarding Whitworth’s ideas and columns for The New Yorker, and with prominent individuals, many regarding the acquisition of original cartoons that appeared in The New Yorker.
