            <head>Biography of Hoyt Spelman</head><p>Hoyt “Pete” Spelman was a graduate of Kent School and Yale with postgraduate work at Harvard/Radcliffe and Oxford. He spent most of his working life in marketing and sales, largely in the magazine publishing business. For many years he was in charge of marketing for <emph>The New Yorker</emph> magazine. Subsequently he was Senior Vice-President and Project Director for the Marketing Corporation of America and Managing Director of The Moorgate Group, the American arm of a British financial marketing company. For several years he was an independent marketing consultant and in 1994 became a broker with Halstead, a real estate firm.</p>

            <head>Scope and Content</head><p>The collection contains correspondence (1969-1980), including memoranda to <emph>The New Yorker</emph> staff regarding advertising, with Phil Dougherty (advertising columnist of <emph>The New York Times</emph>) concerning a publicity campaign, with William Whitworth (columnist and associate editor of <emph>The New Yorker</emph>) regarding Whitworth’s ideas and columns for <emph>The New Yorker</emph>, and with prominent individuals, many regarding the acquisition of original cartoons that appeared in <emph>The New Yorker</emph>.</p>
