Biographical Note

Eugene Ervin Marsh was born in 1900 in Decorah, Iowa, and came to Oregon with his family at age 18. He attended the University of Oregon before transferring to the University of Washington, where he earned a law degree. After a year in Redmond, Oregon, he moved to McMinnville, Oregon, where he served as city attorney from 1931 to 1973. He was first elected to the Oregon House of Representatives as a Republican in 1939, and served as speaker in 1945. In 1946, he advanced to the state Senate, where he was president for the 1953-1954 session. After his term as state Senate president, Marsh retired from politics. His later career included serving as president of the Oregon Historical Society and the Oregon State Bar. Marsh died in his McMinnville home in 1991.

Content Description

The collection consists of memorabilia from Eugene Marsh's time in the Oregon State Legislature. Items include cartoon books by Murray Wade depicting legislators for the 1939 and 1941 sessions, a yearbook of the Legislature for 1951, and photographs of Oregon's legislators in 1939, 1941, 1947, and 1949. All books and most photographs depict Marsh.

Biographical Note

Murray Wade (1876-1961) was from Salem, Oregon, and worked as a cartoonist and journalist for newspapers in Portland, Oregon, and San Francisco, California. In Oregon, he wrote a weekly column titled "Capitol Parade." He was also known for his caricatures of Oregon legislators.
