Content Description

This accession is divided into four main categories based on long standing filing practice. The first and largest category is Departmental Publications. This category is arranged alphabetically by department name. These names are determined by what the department was named when the material was created not by current name. The publications of each department are further sorted into three series. The first series is titled serials. A titled serial is a titled publication that is sent at a scheduled time such as an annual report, bulletin, or newsletter. The second category is titled one-time publications, which include publications such as reports, manuals, handbooks, or studies. The last series is untitled publications. An untitled publication is a publication that does not have a title and is issued only once such as a program, announcement, news release, or poster.

The second category in this accession is University Wide Publications. These are publications that were not issued from or for an individual department or office. This category is also arranged into multiple series such as titled serials, titled one time, untitled publications, photos, histories, and maps.

The third category in this accession is Associated University Publications. This category is made up of publications from organizations of students, faculty and staff that are not officially part of the University of Washington. These include organizations such as professional associations, student clubs, student honoraries, and staff associations. This category is arranged alphabetically by organization name and split into the three series of titled serials, titled one time, and untitled publications.

The last category in this accession is Conferences and Conventions, which is made up of publications collected from conferences and conventions held on the University of Washington campus but not sponsored by the University. This category is sorted alphabetically by conference name and is also separated into the series, titled serials, titled one-time, and untitled publications.

Administrative Information

Processing Note

This accession includes all UW publications and imprints dated 1995 or earlier that were in the collection as of 2001. These materials were received from the office or organization that published them, or were removed from University records or personal papers that were transferred to the University Archives since 1970. Publications and imprints received since 2001, including some older than 2001, are being accumulated and filed according to the same arrangement as this accession.

Scholarly Publications were removed during processing and were either transferred to other units or discarded.

Acquisition Information

The University of Washington Publications collection began in 1970 with a large transfer of publications and imprints from the Libraries’ Pacific Northwest Collection. Although the University of Washington Operations Manual (Vol. IV, Section C, No.18) designates the University Archives as the primary location for one complete archival set of every publication, this has not taken place and this collection is incomplete.
