Historical Note
Amory Holbrook came to Oregon from Massachusetts when he was appointed the United States Attorney for Oregon by President Zachary Taylor. He prosecuted and won the murder trial after the deaths of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. From 1862 to 1864 he was the editor of The Oregonian. He died in 1866, at the age of 46.
Content Description
The collection consists of letters, speeches and documents from the public life of Amory Holbrook. Several (perhaps all) of the speeches were delivered at meetings in the Methodist Church. Most of the documents are certificates recording Holbrook's appointments as a land Commissioner or as U.S. Attorney; some date to the time when he was still living in New England.
