      <head>Biography of Amory A. Holbrook:</head>
      <p>Amory Holbrook came to Oregon from Massachusetts when he was appointed
		  the United States Attorney for Oregon by President Zachary Taylor. He
		  prosecuted and won the murder trial after the deaths of Marcus and Narcissa
		  Whitman. From 1862 to 1864 he was the editor of <emph render="italic">The
		  Oregonian</emph>. He died in 1866, at the age of 46.</p>
    </bioghist>
    <scopecontent encodinganalog="5202_">
      <p>The collection consists of letters, speeches and documents from the
		  public life of Amory Holbrook. Several (perhaps all) of the speeches were
		  delivered at meetings in the Methodist Church. Most of the documents are
		  certificates recording Holbrook's appointments as a land Commissioner or as
		  U.S. Attorney; some date to the time when he was still living in New
		  England.</p>
