Moscow-Pullman Daily News Photographs Collection, 1994-2000

The collection consists of 378 CDs, DVDs, or Blu-ray data discs, primarily containing digital images created between 1994 and 2020. These comprise approximately 583 gigs and 313,000 digital files, primarily photographic images. The images were taken for use by the Moscow-Pullman Daily News newspapers. Some of the photographers represented include Roger Ames, Rajah Bose, Geoff Crimmins, Kai Eiselein, Dean Hare.

The earlier parts of this collection cover the timeframe where their photography was moving from film to digital. In cases where some folders are labeled “dig” and others are not, “dig” refers to born-digital images and those not so labeled are usually scans of images originally created on film. Obviously as they move to all digital, this particular labeling falls out of use.

Several of the discs have gone bad and were either wholly unreadable or some individual files or directories were unrecoverable. Of the 10 chronologically oldest discs, six were completely unreadable and three were partially unreadable. After that only one disc (2015 May) was completely unreadable; one was partially so (effectively much of 2018 December).

The container list here merely lists the discs as titled. Dates are primarily taken from the physical disc labeling, and may not exactly represent their contents. Between all discs there are just over 11,000 folders, too many to list here, but a spreadsheet listing all folders on all discs is available at WSU MASC for easier searching.

It should be noted that for the earlier files in this collection, this was an era where file suffixes were often used as information rather than designating file format. For example, for some period of time images taken by photographer Geoff Crimmins are identified as “.gwc” files. No attempt was made to identify these file types and they are retained as originally named, but for the most part, simply opening them in a modern image program will prove successful.

Most of the Moscow-Pullman Daily News is digitized and available online, and that might be as useful as a tool in finding specific images – once a date is found, one could contact MASC about access to specific images.
