Historical Note

The Moscow-Pullman Daily News is a local newspaper serving eighteen communities in Whitman County, Washington and Latah County, Idaho. The first publication originated with the Daily Star-Mirror, beginning on September 28, 1911. The Daily Star-Mirror merged in 1939 with Moscow News Review, establishing the News-Review Publishing Co., which changed the name of the paper to the Idahonian. Later owners of the Idahonian, Kerns-Tribune Corp., began publishing the Palouse Empire News in 1984, which they merged with the Idahonian in 1991, creating the Moscow-Pullman Daily News. Owned by the Alford family and headquartered in Moscow, Idaho, the print edition of the Moscow-Pullman Daily News appears daily except Sundays.

Content Description

This collection contains thousands of negatives and several photographs from the Idahonian and Moscow-Pullman Daily News, with a majority affiliated with the latter, from the 1970s to 2004. The negatives and photographs feature images of local business, arts, entertainment, agriculture, community festivities, food, and sports. The negatives and photographs portray images and events, including many associated with the University of Idaho and Washington State University, from the greater Palouse region, spanning eighteen communities from northern Idaho and eastern Washington. In some cases, images are accompanied by related programs or letters.

Series 1: General Photographs, 1989-2004. This series contains negatives, prints and slides. Each folder contains negatives and photographs within a designated range of dates. Negatives housed in envelopes with descriptions of the enclosed photographs immediately follow the envelope from which they came, and in their original order. Manuscript material that creates context for specific negatives or photographs will be ordered after related images.

Series 2: Sport Photographs, 1980s-2004. This series contains negatives, prints, and slides. For each year, the photographs are arranged in the following order, when applicable: baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, gymnastics, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling.

Series 3: Miscellaneous Photographs, 1970s-1990s (undated) and 1980-2000. This series contains negatives, prints, and slides.

Note about image identifiers and physical arrangement: A unique identifier has been assigned to digitized images, incorporating information about the physical location of the photograph (example: PC155b22f145d10181992s2r3c4 refers to a negative in the third row and fourth column from sheet two in folder one hundred and forty-five).
