Content Description
The photograph collection of LeGrand Van Uitert consists of personal portraits and various awards banquets. The collection also contains group photographs of unidentified men and a variety of chemical experiments and machinery. Seven, 8x10 black and white; one, 5x7 black and white; and five, 8x10 color prints: 14 total images
Historical Note
LeGrand G. Van Uitert was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1922. He earned a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University and worked as a chemist and materials scientist employed in the Basic Research Division of Bell Labs. He co-invented the first continuous beam optical MASER, now known as a laser.

- 1: American Chemical Society Award for creative invention, 1978, Van Uitert is on the left.
- 2-3: Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, "1971, W.R.G. Baker Prize Award, Van Uitert is the third from the right." While the back of the photo reads 1971, Van Uitert and four others received the 1970 W.R.G. Baker Prize. Possibly the date is for a meeting at which the award was presented.
- 4-5: Unidentified groups of men, LeGrand G. Van Uitert is one of them, second from left. The other men are probably colleagues at Bell Labs, where he worked.
