LeGrand G. Van Uitert was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1922. He earned a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University and worked as a chemist and materials scientist employed in the Basic Research Division of Bell Labs. He co-invented the first continuous beam optical MASER, now known as a laser.

While the back of the photo reads 1971, Van Uitert and four others received the 1970 W.R.G. Baker Prize. Possibly the date is for a meeting at which the award was presented.
- 4-5: Unidentified groups of men, LeGrand G. Van Uitert is one of them, second from left. The other men are probably colleagues at Bell Labs, where he worked.
