Biographical Note

Social worker at the Pioneer Square Neighborhood Health Station. As part of his work Apolonio Buyagawan is able to conduct interviews particularly with senior Filipino residents and to collect other documentation.

    Scope and Content: Tape recorded interviews conducted by Mr. Buyagawan. Segundo Martinez discusses experiences as a "side-actor" in Hollywood movies during the 1930s and 1940s.

    Scope and Content: Two taped interviews. Side one and part of side 2: Interview with Nemesio Domingo, chairman of Alaska Cannery Workers Association regarding various class action suits against New England Fish Co. (NEFCO), Remainder of side 2: Interview with Sam Figueras, who discusses discrimination he experenced as an immigrant in the late 1920s, also his experiences in a mixed marriage. Also one issue of a newsletter The New Tide, dated May, 1974.

  • Accession No. 2263-004: Apolonio K. Buyagawan interview, 1975

    1 sound cassette (30 min.)

    Scope and Content: Tape recorded interview of Mr. and Mrs. Mendoza (early Seattle Filipino couple) conducted by L. Buyagawan on 25 June 1975.

    The couple recall their immigration to the U.S. and settlement in Seattle. Mr. Mendoza arrived alone in 1927. The Mendozas were married in 1935. Mrs. Mendoza was a registered nurse when she arrived and settled in Montana but could not be licensed in Montana. They moved to Seattle in 1942, and Mr. Mendoza got a War Department job. Thereafter he worked for the federal government until 1959.

    Scope and Content: Tape recorded interviews of Sonny Raceles, 1906-, Lino Malare, Charles Madco, Magno Rudio, Chris Mensalvas and George Pope conducted in 1974.

    Contents: Tape 495: Introduction to tapes and comments by A. Buyagawan; Tape 496: Raceles, Sonny (includes songs); Tape 497: Malare, Lino; Tape 498 (Side 1); Madco, Charles; Tape 498 (side 2) and Tape 499: Rudio, Mango, Chris Mensalvas and George Pope. (Interviewer's notes indicate that Tape 498 contains disruptive comments by others present.)
