Historical Background
On August 12, 1912, a wreck involving the train the Olympian occurred in Keechelus, Washington which killed five people: four crewmen--engineers H. Townsend and Henry Nobel; two firemen, John Stembel and H. Spencer; and a woman passenger, Mrs. Simon Jurich. The train, drawn by two locomotives, was approaching the summit of the Cascade Mountains when the forward engine was derailed on a bridge over a small stream. The pounding of the wheels over the ties broke down the bridge and both engines, the mail car and the baggage car fell into the creek.
