Historical Note

Barbara Bickmore (1927-2015) was an American author who began her professional writing career as a fiction novelist in Oregon. Bickmore moved to Oregon in 1973 after teaching high school English in New York for nearly 20 years. While in Oregon, she started a small farm, opened a yarn shop, and eventually taught writing at the University of Oregon for two years. Bickmore published her first book in 1986, and was offered a contract for two more in 1988. She accepted the offer, and later moved to a small village in Mexico where she wrote six of her nine best-selling novels. Her books have sold in 22 countries and have been published in 16 different languages. Bickmore died in Anacortes, Washington in 2015.

Content Description

The Barbara Bickmore papers consist of manuscripts, research material, and published works written by the American fiction novelist, Barabara Bickmore. Works represented in the collection include East of the Sun (1988), The Moon Below (1990), Commuters to a Distant War (circa 1992), and Distant Star (originally titled Commuters to a Distant War, circa 1992).

This collection contains published copies of East of the Sun (1988) and The Moon Below (1990). A typescript draft with related digital material for The Moon Below is also present. Research files for Commuters to a Distant War (circa 1992) contain typed notes and photocopied, annotated articles that focus on Chinese history (circa 1920s-1930s). Outlines and a typescript draft for Commuters to a Distant War are also present, along with an annotated manuscript for Distant Star (originally titled Commuters to a Distant War).
