Content Description

Posters, booklets, original artwork and artifacts depicting logos designed by Leo Ames, many advertising campus events or highlighting the university logo at the time. Also includes his working files, correspondence, and drafts and original artwork regarding creation of university logos and how and where they are used in university branded or published material.

Historical Note

Born on 14 February 1933, Leo Edwin Ames grew up in Heyburn, Idaho, going on to attend the University of Idaho journalism program. Ames married fellow student Lela May Talbott in April 1954. In 1995, after over 30 years of service in communications and creative services, Ames retired from the University of Idaho as creative director and head of publications.

Leo Ames participated in local Moscow and Idaho politics. He was a member of the U of I Women's Caucus that was instrumental in the establishment of affirmative action at the University of Idaho as well as the development of the U of I Women's Center. Ames was also an accomplished artist, particularily enjoyoing plein air landscape painting. Ames passed away 17 May 2004.

Administrative Information

Acquisition Information

The collection is made up of seven accessions, including materials recieved from Leo Ames in 1987 (UA 1987-14), 1993 (UA 1993-18), 1994 (UA 1994-09 and 1994-19) and 1995 (UA 1995-03). Materials transferred from University Communications in 1997 (UA 1997-13). Materials also recieved from Julia Ames (daughter of Leo Ames) in 2021 (UA 2021-30).

Processing Note

Files were kept in the original order with original titles, the exception being for oversized materials housed together and for materials that were originally unfoldered or folders placed within folders which were separated and either placed in new folders or combined with like materials.

Collection has been minimally processed. Dates and folder titles may be updated in the future.

Additional materials were located in Special Collections offices and were labeled with "Leo Ames". Materials were added to this collection because of that note. These materials are "Martin Luther King Jr. articles" folder 237, "Robert F. Kennedy articles" folder 238, and "MLK Jr. oversized materials" folder 1.
