Biographical Note
Charles Mason MacDougall Rice was born on April 28, 1898. His career in industrial education included twenty years in the public schools of Everett, Washington, and twenty years at the Western Washington College of Education (now Western Washington University). In the 1920s and 1930s, Rice published numerous articles on craftsmanship and industrial arts in national magazines. He was also an amateur photographer whose work was widely exhibited across the state of Washington and elsewhere. After his retirement in 1965, he contributed more than 150 articles on local history and folklore to the Snohomish County Tribune. Charles Rice died on February 26, 1993.
Content Description
The collection contains manuscripts, published articles, notes, correspondence, and scrapbooks relating primarily to Rice’s teaching of industrial arts at both the high school and college level. A bound volume titled “Chronology of a Fifty-Year Career in Industrial Education” begins in 1911 and is a scrapbook of letters, notes, and newspaper articles. Another bound volume, “Chronology of Construction of the ‘Arts’ Building,” contains miscellaneous documents dating from about 1944 to 1950; it is supplemented by 34 photographs of the original teaching areas in the Industrial Arts Department at WWU. Also available are several folders of notes, architectural plans of WWU facilities, and other materials used in teaching, as well as one folder containing Rice’s vita and lists of publications.
