Historical Note
The USS Utah (BB-31) was laid down in 1909 and commissioned in 1911. In 1914, along with sister ship USS Florida, Utah was the first ship to arrive in Veracruz during the United States occupation during the Mexican Revolution. During World War I, Utah was stationed off the coast of Ireland to patrol against German incursion. In the 1920s, the battleship was used in training and was used to transport dignitaries to South America. In 1931, Utah was redesignated as AG-16, demilitarized, and used in training. Utah was struck by two torpedoes during the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Though the majority of the crew escaped, 58 men were killed as the ship rolled and sank. The wreck of the USS Utah remains in Pearl Harbor and is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Historic Landmark.
