The USS <title render="italic">Utah</title> Log Album contains black-and-white photographs of people, places, and machinery of the <title render="italic">Utah</title> dating from 1929 to 1931.</abstract>

            <head>Historical Note</head>
            <p>The USS <title render="italic">Utah</title> (BB-31) was laid down in 1909 and commissioned in 1911. In 1914, along with sister ship USS <title render="italic">Florida</title>, <title render="italic">Utah</title> was the first ship to arrive in Veracruz during the United States occupation during the Mexican Revolution. During World War I, <title render="italic">Utah</title> was stationed off the coast of Ireland to patrol against German incursion. In the 1920s, the battleship was used in training and was used to transport dignitaries to South America. In 1931, <title render="italic">Utah</title> was redesignated as AG-16, demilitarized, and used in training. <title render="italic">Utah</title> was struck by two torpedoes during the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Though the majority of the crew escaped, 58 men were killed as the ship rolled and sank. The wreck of the USS <title render="italic">Utah</title> remains in Pearl Harbor and is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Historic Landmark.

            <p>The USS <title render="italic">Utah</title> Log Album is a fragile photobook containing black-and-white photographs of people, places, and machinery related to the USS <title render="italic">Utah</title> from 1929 to 1931. Most of the photographs are fitted into the pages, while several are unattached. The photographs are accompanied by names, addresses, and comments, My Log and Diary, news clippings, photographs, photogrpahic postcards, and souvenir prints.</p>
