Content Description

F. Jay Haynes (1853-1921) was the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad and Yellowstone National Park. In May 1978, Isabel M. Haynes of Bozeman, Montana donated a collection of more than 23,000 photographs taken by F. Jay Haynes and his son Jack Ellis Haynes to the Montana Historical Society.

Among the many sub-collections that came to the MHS from the Haynes family was a set of architectural drawings and renderings of buildings and sites in Yellowstone National Park, circa 1890-1930. These drawings were collected by Jack Ellis Haynes, son and business partner of F. J. Haynes. None of the drawings in the collection are attributed to Haynes, and it is not clear how he came to have them.

The 300 drawings in the Yellowstone Architectural Drawings Collection contain original materials related to the development of architecture in Yellowstone National Park. These drawings document the development of the proposed and approved plans for many of the most significant properties built in Yellowstone National Park. These sites and properties include Old Faithful Inn, Canyon Lodge, the Lake Hotel, Gardiner Railway Depot, and several private residences. Work by architects Robert C. Reamer, A.W. Spalding, Fred L. Willson, Gilbert Stanley Underwood, and C. H. Kirk are represented in this collection. Most of the collection is made of up of original drawings and sketches by Robert C. Reamer.

Other drawings included in the collection are sketches of permanent camps located in the Park, furniture for various Park buildings, boats, and miscellaneous maps.
