Historical Note
Helmut Gunther Callis was born on 1906 April 6 in Silesia, at the time in the Austro-Hngarian empire (current day Poland). He received his BA and MA degrees in Switzerland and his PhD in Leipzig, Germany. In the 1930s, Callis traveled through Japan and Russia and developed interest and expertise in Asian politics. He taught political science and history at the University of Utah. Helmut Callis married Ellen Charline Besse on 1979 March 20. Helmut Callis died on 1982 September 2.

The Helmut Callis photograph collection consists of 1 archives box containing 2 black-and-white photographs. The first is a photograph of Helmut Callis in Japan in the 1930s. The second is a black-and-white photograph of Callis and his family taken in support of a news article about parenting.
