    <bioghist encodinganalog="545">
      <p>Helmut Gunther Callis was born on 1906 April 6 in Silesia, at the time in the Austro-Hngarian empire (current day Poland). He received his BA and MA degrees in Switzerland and his PhD in Leipzig, Germany. In the 1930s, Callis traveled through Japan and Russia and developed interest and expertise in Asian politics. He taught political science and history at the University of Utah. Helmut Callis married Ellen Charline Besse on 1979 March 20. Helmut Callis died on 1982 September 2.</p>
